D&D / RPG News for Monday, 12 July, 2010

New for EN World Subscribers Last week, the 4E version of War of the Burning Sky #5: Mission to the Monastery of Two Winds was added to the subscriber download area . Due to an inexplicably slow internet connection, I wasn't able to add the D&D 3.5 version of that adventure until today.

Adding Favours to Treasure Bundles from Dungeon's Master

Your reward for rescuing the Duke’s daughter is a magical weapon, a suit of enchanted armor and a favour.” As D&D characters become more and more powerful they always seem to become filthy rich along the way.

Pre-Release Review of Amethyst: Foundations by Dias Ex Machina (Part 2) from NEUROGLYPH Games

If technology worked, the science behind it also had to.  Science declared magic as myth.  You can’t throw fire from your hands.  You can’t fly without proper wings.  You can’t be succumbed by the temptations of an elvish princess.  “There’s nothing out there,” his brother said.  He lied.

How Certain Weapons Get Tooled from Gamer Bling!

Gamer Bling has long been a fan of spears. He does not know exactly when it started, but it may have started with the exquisitely rendered cover of his father’s boxed set of Wagner’s Ring (on 33rpm vinyl, of course, and played repeatedly on a monaural sound system to Gamer Bling’s great yet…

Following up on my last post, I intend to disparage no one, including my players past and present, but a malaise sets in on me occasionally when I’m playing a D&D game. Players seem lethargic. They don’t respond to the information given to them.

D&D Encounters (Week 5) from Dungeon's Master

D&D Encounters is a 12-part adventure from Wizards of the Coast and it’s played out one encounter each week over the next 12 weeks. I was very happy when we were allowed to take an extended rest at the start of this week’s encounter. I learned afterward that the adventure is broken into three..

Quest questions… from Treehouse: » RPG

Thinking in terms of quests helps focus the adventurer solidly where it belongs: on the player characters. An adventure isn’t something that can unfold without their involvement. A plot or event can can unfold without the characters involvement,  but not an adventure.

Have You Retrained Today? from Dungeon's Master

One of the great aspects of 4e is it officially recognized retraining. Finally, we had a formal rule for the process of substituting a power or a feat. In previous versions this aspect of the game was either forbidden or house ruled.

Homebrew classes with augmented powers from Geek Ken

I think one of the challenges of creating new classes for 4E is the sheer number of powers and abilities someone needs to put to paper. Then balancing all these to what would be considered a decent at-will, encounter, or daily power. It's a huge task.
